Rossford soldier dies in Afghanistan
8/26/2007KABUL, Afghanistan A man from Rossford was one of two Army soldiers with Ohio ties who were killed during noncombat convoy operations when a Humvee rolled over in Afghanistan, the military reported yesterday.
Army Sgt. 1st Class Daniel E. Miller of Rossford and Army Sgt. 1st Class Scott Carney of Ankeny, Iowa, died when the Humvee they were riding in flipped Friday near Herat, Afghanistan, according to Iowa National Guard officials.
Sergeant Miller, 43, was assigned to the 1st Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, in Fort Riley, Kan. Attempts to reach people who knew Sergeant Miller were unsuccessful.
Sergeant Carney, 37, graduated from Sheridan High School in Thornville, Ohio. He was assigned to the National Guard s 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 34th Infantry Division in Boone, Iowa.
Sergeant Carney s unit arrived in Afghanistan in May and provided advanced combat training to the Afghan National Army and Afghan police.
Sergeant Carney is survived by his wife, Jeni, and twin sons, Jacob and Justin.
Scott died doing what he loved, serving his country and protecting the freedom that we enjoy and providing the people of Afghanistan with the opportunity for freedom, his family said.
No further details were released. The accident is under investigation.
Elsewhere across Afghanistan, a string of bombings and gun battles killed 41 people and left at least six wounded, including two foreigners hurt in a suicide bombing near the capital.
Insurgent violence is running at its highest level since U.S. forces invaded the country in 2001 to oust the hard-line Islamic Taliban rulers, who had harbored al-Qaeda leaders.
Most of the violence is concentrated in southern or eastern Afghanistan.
