Poland opens debate on joining euro
2/19/2013WARSAW, Poland — Polish lawmakers have started a debate to decide when the country should adopt the euro, the currency used by 17 European Union nations.
An EU member since 2004, Poland is still to name the date when it intends to adopt the euro. Officials say Poland should meet all financial requirements in 2015, but will wait for a moment best suited to its interests.
As he launched the debate, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk appealed to lawmakers today to approve the fiscal compact, a set of debt-control regulations that came into force Jan. 1 for countries that ratified it.
Tusk said Poland should ratify the fiscal compact as it would give the country a greater say in EU financial issues. Lawmakers are to vote on the compact on Wednesday.
