JERUSALEM — Israel’s defense minister says Lebanon has pledged to punish the sniper who killed an Israeli soldier in a cross-border shooting this week.

Military officials from the two enemy countries met Monday with U.N. mediators to lower tensions. Speaking about the meeting today, Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon said Israel was told the sniper was a “rogue” soldier who disobeyed orders.

He said, “they jailed him, interrogated him, and according to their claims, they will punish him” for violating directives. He said Israel had asked to be updated about the case.

A senior Lebanese security official said investigators were still questioning the soldier and declined to say whether any disciplinary measures would be taken. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the matter with the media.
