YAOUNDE, Cameroon — Unidentified assailants attacked the camp of a Chinese company in Cameroon, leaving 10 people missing and one injured, Chinese state media reported today.

The Chinese Embassy in Yaounde, Cameroon’s capital, confirmed the attack and said it had demanded that the African nation’s government find the missing people and ensure the safety of Chinese nationals in the region, the official Xinhua News Agency reported.

Xinhua did not identify the Chinese company involved in the attack or give details of its operation. It also did not mention a possible motive for the attack.

Calls to the Chinese Embassy in Cameroon rang unanswered toay.

China has a growing presence in Cameroon, helping the country build infrastructure, sports facilities and public health projects. But it also has drawn criticisms for neocolonialism.

Trade between the two countries reached $1.88 billion in 2013. China primarily sells machinery, textiles, electronics and high-tech products to Cameroon, while importing crude oil, timber and cotton from the African country.
