Music Fest 2014 offers music variety

Music fans will converge Friday on the University of Toledo’s main campus to enjoy free performances during UT’s Music Fest 2014. The outdoor music festival will kick off at 4 p.m. in the Rocket Hall Parking lot (Area 25) on the southwest corner of the campus.

Opening is Detroit- based band the Infatuations, with a mix of pop, rock, soul, and funk. A pep rally will follow at 5 p.m. to get the Rockets and fans excited for the first home football game at 7 p.m. Saturday against New Hampshire in the Glass Bowl. Music Fest regular Alexander Zonjic will return with his signature jazz. He takes that stage at 5:45 p.m. with Motor City Horns and Serieux. Following is 2008 American Idol winner David Cook, who performs at 7:45 p.m. Fans will hear hit singles such as Light On and Come Back To Me from his successful selftitled debut album that sold more than 1 million copies. Singer-songwriter Mike Posner will close out the show with a 10 p.m. performance including hits such as Cooler Than Me from his 2010 debut album. The song hit No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Posner is also the writer and producer behind Justin Bieber’s Boyfriend and Labrinth and Emeli Sande’s Beneath Ur Beautiful. New this year, music fans age 21 and older can enjoy the beer garden from the Treu House of Munch. Proceeds will benefit UT’s Tie One On fund-raising initiative for cancer care, awareness, and outreach. Also new is a special encore performance by Red Wanting Blue on Saturday during football tailgate celebrations.

● Visit the Toledo Zoo on Saturday for a day dedicated to little creatures that creep, crawl, float, and flutter.

The Butterfly & Bug Fest invites guests to experience fun, hands-on science activities from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Children participate in all sorts of buggy games, from harvesting and tasting honey to playing in spider ball tournaments. The whole family can take part in the Zoo’s Keeper Tales live animal show and story times, plus a visit from BUGMAN. Imagination Station will be on the grounds with a buggy activity of its own. It all happens in Nature’s Neighborhood.

The Butterfly & Bug Fest is free with regular zoo admission of $12 for seniors and children age 12 and under. Adult admission is $15 and children age 2 and under are admitted free. Parking is $7 per vehicle. The zoo is open 7 days a week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Starting Sept. 2, the zoo is open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and weekends from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Information: toledozoo.org.
