Coaching chatter

4/8/2008

Of the 31 Division I coaching openings so far this year, 20 have been filled. The odds are that the University of Toledo will finish its searches quite soon. Notre Dame assistant Gene Cross was on campus today and I m told the discussion went well. But UT could still look at one more person here in the next few days.

Reading the Detroit papers, something interesting is happening with another candidate, former Saint Louis coach Brad Soderberg. Terry Foster wrote on his blog on the Detroit News' Web site that Soderberg has been offered the Detroit-Mercy job but is waiting to see what happens at Toledo. This does not sit well with Foster. I had heard that UDM wanted a person with head coaching experience for its job so this would follow with that.

I did some reading on Cross today and he appears to be the disciplinarian assistant. When he first got to ND he instilled some new defensive drills and brings a toughness to the team.
