ATLANTA Delta Air Lines Inc., the third-largest U.S. carrier, will follow United Airlines in charging $25 for a second checked bag to help recoup surging fuel costs.

The fee will start in May, Chief Executive Officer Richard Anderson said in a weekly recorded message to employees. Neither most-frequent fliers nor first-class passengers will be charged, a spokesman said.
