Hundreds to be hired in Toledo for census; jobs to pay $10.75 to $16.50 hourly
11/14/2008The U.S. Census Bureau has begun recruiting efforts to fill tens of thousands of jobs nationally - and hundreds locally - needed to begin the legwork to conduct the 2010 census.
"It's really just a speeding train at this point," explained Kim D. Hunter, a spokesman for the Census Bureau's regional office in Detroit. "We just hired six managers, and they're in the process of hiring 30 or 40 full-time people who will be tasked to hire 800 to 1000 more people to do address canvassing."
The jobs in Toledo will pay between $10.75 and $16.50 an hour, and those interested in applying should call the Census Bureau toll free at 1-866-861-2010, or visit Web site www.2010censusjobs.gov.
The census, conducted every 10 years, compiles a wide range of information about communities and residents across the nation. The census itself won't be conducted until 2010, but the advance work required is enormous, Mr. Hunter said.
First to be hired, starting in February, are workers who fan out across the nation to verify individual addresses from which census data will be collected. These canvassers will be paid during four days of training and for six to eight weeks to gather the address information, he said.
The Census Bureau is looking for people "who can work fast and be detail oriented, because accuracy is one of the hallmarks of our organization," Mr. Hunter said. "It's a pretty fast-paced operation."
The bureau has opened its first five regional offices in Ohio in preparation for the 2010 Census, including one at 600 Jefferson Ave., Suite 225. Other offices have been opened in Cleveland, Cincinnati, Columbus, and Canton, and 5,000 positions will be filled in Ohio.
