Jobless rate jumps above 10% in northwest Ohio
12/23/2008Unemployment rates for November jumped above 10 percent in three northwest Ohio counties, according to figures released Tuesday by the state Department of Job and Family Services.
As the statewide rate stayed unchanged last month at 7.3 percent, the jobless rate climbed in Huron County to 10.6 percent from 9.6 percent the month before; in Ottawa County to 10.3 percent from 8.3 percent; and in Van Wert County to 10.9 percent from 9.9 percent. The Van Wert figure is the highest among the state s 88 counties.
The Lucas County rate increased to 9.5 percent in November, with 21,700 people unemployed. The rate was 8.9 percent in October and 6.1 percent a year earlier.
Toledo s rate also jumped to 10.3 percent, up from 9.6 percent and the third time this year it exceeded 10 percent. It was the highest rate among 20 Ohio cities listed by the state report.
The soured economy and massive layoffs in the auto industry were the primary reasons for the increased rates in the Toledo area.
The lowest rate in the area was 5.8 percent in Putnam County.
The national jobless rate last month was 6.7 percent.
