The falling cost of natural gas for home heating is about to reach its lowest level in a decade.

Columbia Gas of Ohio said Monday that it has requested approval for an October rate for gas of 49 cents per 100 cubic feet, the lowest rate for October since 1999. The rate is a decrease of 52 percent from a year ago when Columbia Gas was charging $1.03 per 100 cubic feet.

The utility said that based on average consumption, customers can expect October bills to average $31.67. The rate must be approved by the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio.
