Joblessness declined across northwest Ohio in September, according to a report Tuesday from the state Department of Job and Family Services.

The unemployment rate dropped in most counties in the region. Lucas County fell to 11.3 percent last month from 12.4 percent in August. However, the rate remains well above the 7.8 percent rate a year ago.

In the immediate Toledo area, monthly unemployment in the city of Toledo was 12.1 percent, down from 13.2 percent in August and 8.4 percent in September, 2008; in Wood County, the rate was 10 percent, down from 11 percent in August but up from 6.9 percent a year earlier.

Unemployment declined statewide to 10.1 percent in September from 10.8 percent in August, but rose nationally to 9.8 percent from 9.7 percent.
