Columbia Gas of Ohio said Friday its customer rate for September will be 56 cents per 100 cubic feet of natural gas, 11 cents cheaper than this month's rate.

The new rate is based on Friday's natural-gas commodity closing price of 36.5 cents on the New York Mercantile Exchange, plus 19.3 cents that is a state-regulated service charge set by an annual auction.

The commodity price was lower because supplies of the fuel stored for the winter are reaching record highs and new supply sources have been discovered, a Columbia Gas spokesman said.
