COLUMBUS — The second lawsuit in less than a week has been filed against fitness chain Urban Active, this time in federal court.

The action, filed this week in U.S. District Court in Columbus, alleges that the company illegally billed customers after they canceled their memberships. It was filed on behalf of Edward Lundberg and Terry E. Troutman and other Urban Active customers who say they were victims of illegal billing practices. The case is seeking class-action status.

The suit alleges, among other things, that the company continued deducting membership payments after contracts were canceled and didn’t reimburse consumers for those payments. The fitness-club chain was sued last week in Franklin County Common Pleas Court, a case that alleges the company violated the state’s consumer-protection laws by engaging in unfair and deceptive conduct.
