A Michigan construction firm has been fined $54,600 for safety violations found during an unannounced inspection of a site on Detroit Avenue in Toledo where the firm was repairing a storm basin.

WPM Construction Services Inc. of Grand Blanc was cited for one willful violation and two serious violations found Feb. 18 at the site by inspectors from the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration. The violations included workers not wearing safety helmets and reflector vests visible to traffic, and no system to protect workers from potential cave-ins during excavation work.

An OSHA official said the inspection occurred as a result of an inspector passing by the site en route to another inspection and noticing the violations. A company representative said the firm plans to contest the fine.
