Crown Battery Manufacturing Co. of Fremont has been cited for three worker safety violations by federal regulators and issued $97,000 in fines.

The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration said Tuesday the firm’s repeated failures to take safety precautions was “unacceptable.”

The firm was cited for one willful violation -- the most serious of offenses -- for allowing employees to sweep in areas where lead is used and processed. It also had a repeat violation for overexposing employees to lead and lacking controls for lead exposure, and a serious violation for failing to test an equipment’s lifting capacity.

The citations stemmed from a February inspection.

The company can appeal the citation and proposed fines.
