COLUMBUS -- Ohio State University students are starting a three-year competition aimed at squeezing more mileage out of a conventional vehicle.

The Ecocar 2 project, sponsored by General Motors Co. and the U.S. Department of Energy, began last week. Teams from OSU and 15 other universities will work to modify Chevrolet Malibus.

In June, OSU’s team finished second in the previous three-year cycle of the initiative. In that competition, it made changes to a compact sport utility vehicle.
