The 170 employees at the Hostess Brands Inc. bakery in Northwood recently received letters saying that they could be laid off, but a Hostess official said the company has no plans to close the facility.

Anita-Marie Laurie, a spokesman for the company, told The Blade that Hostess has no immediate plans to lay anyone off.

Hostess sent the layoff notices to all of its 18,000-plus employees nationwide. The notifications were required under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, which requires employers to give notice before they conduct mass layoffs and enact some corporate changes.

Hostess entered bankruptcy protection in January, less than three years after its predecessor, Interstate Bakeries, emerged from bankruptcy.

Hostess also has a bakery in Defiance as well as outlet stores in Toledo and Northwood.
