Bank On Toledo, aimed at helping the underbanked and unbanked populations, celebrated its one-year anniversary Thursday. It attempts to help area residents gain access to low-fee checking accounts while decreasing dependence on check-cashing outlets that often charge high fees.

The program also offers information and education on home ownership, budgeting, credit ratings, credit-card use, and saving.

Participating financial institutions include Charter One, Directions Credit Union, Fifth Third Bank, FirstMerit Bank, Huntington, KeyBank, Nueva Esparanza Credit Union, PNC Bank, State Bank and Trust Co., Toledo Urban Federal Credit Union, and Great Lakes Credit Union.
