A Boston-based energy development group announced plans today to build a natural gas-fired power plant in Oregon.

Construction is still at least a year away, and is expected to take 26 to 30 months, but North American Project Development LLC officials said they've submitted their air permit application and felt the project was far enough along to announce it to the public.

They were joined by Oregon city officials in announcing the project.

The plant would generate 800 megawatts of power - enough new electricity for 500,000 homes. The developers would retain ownership of the plant and sell the power it generates to a utility.

Total investment is expected to exceed $800 million.
