Huntington’s top exec named Banker of Year

COLUMBUS — Stephen Steinour, the top executive at Huntington Bancshares Inc., has been named Banker of the Year by American Banker Magazine.

Mr. Steinour, 54, led Columbus-based Huntington through the financial crisis, restored profitability sooner than expected, and positioned it as a retail-banking force in its primary markets. He also is credited with initiatives that helped the bank grow, including adding branch offices, expanding small-business lending, and becoming more customer-friendly.

He took over at Huntington during the heart of the financial crisis in early 2009.
