The second week of The Blade’s annual School Stock Contest was dominated by multiple teams from the same schools.

Anthony Wayne Junior High School, Springfield High School, and Bowling Green High School each had several teams in the Top 30 slots — a feat the teachers overseeing the student competitors attribute to picking hot stocks.

“You have to pay attention to everything,” said Kay-Lynne Schaller, who teaches three top-ranked teams at Anthony Wayne Junior High School. “You have to pay attention to the headline news, you have to pay attention to what your friends think is cool, you have to pay attention what your parents are buying, everything. You have to pay attention to politics especially.”

Cashbag, one of Ms. Schaller’s teams, is in first place with $43,294 in its portfolio. Its holdings include The Walt Disney Co., Apple Inc., First Solar Inc., and Titan International Inc.

First Solar has sparked the team so far, rising about 20 percent (from $28.33 a share to $34.09 a share) in the last two weeks.

Ms. Schaller’s other teams are ranked 14th and 30th.

“A couple of years ago, one of my teams won,” she said. “I know lightning is not supposed to strike twice, and I know very well it’s only the second week, but it’s pretty exciting.”

The 12-week contest began Feb. 4 and runs through April 26. The 113 teams participating each chose four stocks worth at least $5 a share for their portfolios.

Each team was given a hypothetical $40,000 budget, and the funds were allocated evenly among the four stocks. Participants have one chance to change their stocks: March 8.

At the end of the 12 weeks, the team with the best-performing portfolio will win $250 for the students and $250 for the school. Second place will receive $250 for the school, and third place gets $100 for the school. The prizes can be cash or gift certificates.

The contest is sponsored by The Blade’s Newspaper in Education program, the Taylor Automotive Family, Fifth Third Bank, and the University of Toledo, which calculates the results.

Last week’s leader, Preptar, from Dundee High School in Dundee, Mich., fell to 37th place. It lost almost 4 percent during the second week, finishing with $40,654. The decrease shows how far stocks can rise and fall from week to week, said Ronald Belle, investment advisers executive and senior vice president at Fifth Third.

“Those teams that were among the top, those trends were energy-service companies, pharmaceutical companies, as well as online retailers,” Mr. Belle said. “In the first two weeks of results, you saw the top three teams change both weeks.”

Ron Nickey, a teacher at Bowling Green High School, has four teams in the Top 30. He’s hopeful his teams can hold on to their places. Mr. Nickey’s teams are in his economics and practical-money-skills classes. His top-ranked teams are in third, fifth, sixth, and 11th places.

Mr. Nickey’s 11th-place team, Gambrel, was in second place during the first week. Its portfolio is comprised of Microsoft Corp., Basic Energy Services Inc., Select Medical Holdings Corp., and RDA Microelectronics Inc.

Mr. Nickey’s students spend the beginning of each class monitoring the market and evaluating how their stocks are performing. He said Gambrel’s decline, along with the fluctuation of his other teams, should teach the students about how quickly the market can change, along with fostering a healthy competition.

“They get a little bit wound up about their picks,” Mr. Nickey said.
