The owner of a Huron County plastics plant has been fined $86,000 and cited for six safety violations by inspectors from the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

Berry Plastics Corp., of Evansville, Ind., was found to have two repeat violations and four serious violations after inspectors visited the firm’s Monroeville, Ohio, plant in February, 2012. Monroeville is 55 miles southeast of Toledo.

The repeat violations were for failing to document and utilize hazardous energy control procedures for machinery in the company’s factory and failing to conduct periodic inspections of these procedures. Berry Plastics previously was cited for those same violations at other plants.

The four serious violations at the Monroeville plant were for failing to guard rotating parts on machines, failing to use fixed stairs to access elevated areas of equipment, failing to properly use fall-protection equipment, and failing to provide electrical safety-related personal protective equipment.

The firm has 15 business days from the date of the citation to comply, request a conference, or contest the findings.
