O-I, Calif. firm to invest in recycled glass

Owens-Illinois Inc. is teaming with California-based eCullet Inc. to invest in sophisticated glass-sorting equipment that will make more high-quality recycled glass available for use in O-I plants.

The dollar amount of the investment was not revealed.

The Perrysburg company, which is the world’s largest glass-container maker, said using recycled glass in the manufacturing process will allow it to reduce its use of raw materials, reducing its overall environmental imprint.

Much of the recycled glass collected in North America is too contaminated to be reintroduced into the manufacturing process because it comes from single-stream recycling, which mixes paper, metal, plastic, and glass.
