WASHINGTON — The federal government says it hired the highest percentage of military veterans in more than two decades in fiscal year 2012, with veterans making up about 29 percent of the 195,000 new employees.

Veterans were 46 percent of the new hires at the Defense Department, nearly 35 percent of new hires at the Social Security Administration, and more than a third of the new hires at the Veterans Affairs and Transportation departments.
