  • A North Toledo firm that supplies tools and fixtures that elevator companies use for installation and maintenance has announced plans to expand its headquarters.

Wurtec Inc., at 6200 Brent Dr. in the North Cross Industrial Park, will add 31,000 square feet of space this spring primarily to increase its manufacturing space.

The privately owned company plans a groundbreaking ceremony on Monday. It expects to finish the addition in August.

Wurtec, which was formed in 1985 by Steve Wurth, a former industrial engineer who worked for Haughton Elevator Co., is a global manufacturer and distributor of parts and products for the passenger elevator industry.

It is a prime supplier to top firms in the industry: Otis Elevator Co., ThyssenKrupp Elevator, Kone, and Schindler Elevator Corp.

The expansion will include 25,000 square feet of manufacturing and warehouse space.

The addition will fill a need for added space for the firm’s manufacturing lines and more warehouse space for additional distribution.

The company plans to add its Elevator Concepts Ltd. by Wurtec residential elevator, dumbwaiter, and limited use limited application elevator product lines to its manufacturing operations.

Wurtec also is adding another 6,000 square feet of office space for future staffing additions.

The company added 10 employees in 2013.
