The plans for a medical building to have skilled nursing and rehabilitation services on the ProMedica Flower Hospital campus received unanimous approval on Wednesday by the Syvlania Board of Architectural Review.

The architectural board, comprised of five members, reviews structure plans for aesthetic characteristics. Its approval of the Heartland at ProMedica building comes just days before a ceremonial groundbreaking for the structure on Monday.

Board members were “impressed” with the building and its external elements, saying it did not resemble a medical building. Mayor Craig Stough said it will be a “wonderful addition” to the community.

The 65,000-square foot rehabilitation facility, created with a patient-to-home transition in mind, will replace the Lake Park rehabilitation facility on the Flower campus. HCR ManorCare of Toledo will operate it. ManorCare has built similar nursing facilities in New Jersey and Michigan.

Renderings of the building were presented by Bryan Palmer, senior project manager for ManorCare, who also showed a digital 360-degree view of it. The building was designed with a hospitality feel, he said.

The building, to be constructed at the northwest corner near Ebeid Hospice building, will have a similar facade and color as the buildings around, made with limestone veneer, he said. The renderings show how the first level front of the building, which is a single story, is built into the hillside, but the building will have two stories.

In November, Sylvania’s City Council unanimously approved a revised site plan for the Harroun Road campus that included the future building.

Julie Beckert, a spokesman for ManorCare, said it is reviewing building construction bids. It plans to open the facility in May, 2015. It is estimated to cost from $13 million to $15 million.

The facility will have 120 beds, a gym, flat screen TVs, common areas for socializing, a barbershop, and beauty shop. It will also contain a 3,000 square foot rehabilitation gym, lined with large windows.
