COLUMBUS — Natural-gas production in Ohio shale formations rose 28 percent in the fourth quarter last year compared with a year earlier, according to figures released by the state.

Oil production was up 8 percent in the same period.

Nearly all the production was in the Utica shale formation, which covers much of the eastern and southern parts of the state. A small portion of production was in the Marcellus shale formation, which covers the far eastern part of the state.
