The president of the local migrant workers' union, four beryllium disease activists, and a social and environmental justice worker were recognized by Ohio Citizen Action as it celebrated its 25th birthday last night at 20 North Gallery in downtown Toledo.

The Howard Metzenbaum award went to Baldemar Velasquez, president of the Farm Labor Organizing Committee.

Beryllium disease activists Dave and Theresa Norgard and Gary and Barb Renwand received a leadership award, and Stephen Miller, a social and environmental justice activist, received the lifetime leadership award.

Speaking at the event was Charles Kernaghan, director of the National Labor Committee. He spoke earlier in the day at the University of Toledo student union on “The Fight to End Child Labor and Sweatshops.”
