Toledo man killed in 1-vehicle crash
11/6/2000A 21-year-old Toledo man died early yesterday when he was thrown from his vehicle when it left the roadway, hit a mailbox, and flipped over, police said.
Lee J. Cousino of 3921 Burton Ave. was pronounced dead on arrival at Medical College of Ohio Hospitals. Authorities said the vehicle was eastbound on Angola at Wenz roads when it left the street.
The vehicle struck a mailbox and other objects, flipped over several times, and came to rest on the driver's side. Mr. Cousino was found several feet from the vehicle, police said.
The accident remains under investigation, police said.
BLUFFTON - The large number of accidents that occur along a sretch of road connecting the village with I-75 has led officials to consider the possibility of widening State Rt. 103.
Accidents and traffic backups are becoming common because of the number of restaurants and other businesses that have proliferated near I-75. “We feel we've had a fair amount of accidents there in the last five to 10 years,” Village Administrator Steve Mcfadden said.
One proposal calls for widen the street to allow a third lane that would be used for turns.
The plan, with its estimated $1.8 million cost, would include curbs and gutters, and a sidewalk to connect the village with the newer restaurants. Mr. McFadden estimates 10 to 12 accidents occur on this road each year.
DEFIANCE - The Federal Aviation Administration has promised Defiance County $410,000 toward the planned expansion of the county airport.
The money, which will be spread over three years, will help pay for environmental studies and purchase of easements as part of the runway expansion.
The Defiance County Airport Authority plans to spend $1.4 million to add 800 feet, which would lengthen the runway to 5,400 feet.
A longer runway will allow the airport to accommodate larger jets.
HOLIDAY CITY, O - This Williams County hamlet, which was formed in 1997 so that low-cost electricity could be purchased for a nearby industry, has finally received its official U.S. Postal Service designation.
The handful of residents and businesses in the 1.5 square-mile village have been using a Montpelier mailing address. However, according to the Holiday City village council, mail now should be addressed to Holiday City, O.
Montpelier's 43543 ZIP code will remain in use, however, and mail for Holiday City will be handled by the post office in Montpelier.
The village's 25 or 30 residents elected a mayor, clerk-treasurer, and city council for the first time in November, 1997.
Holiday City's largest employer is Chase Brass & Copper Co., but probably its most prominent business is the sprawling Holiday Inn Resort and Convention Center, for which the village is named.
BUCYRUS, O. – A 52-year-old Bloomville, O., man died late Saturday when his pickup rammed into the side of a moving train on State Rt. 103 east of State Rt. 4 in Crawford County.
Jerry L. Culp was westbound on Rt. 103 when he failed to stop his truck at the Norfolk and Southern Railroad tracks and hit three northbound train cars.
Rail employees said they were unaware of the collision until they stopped in Seneca County. Mr. Culp was pronounced dead in St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center, Toledo.
The Crawford County sheriff's department is investigating the crash.
