Walgreen Co. granted abatement for warehouse

1/9/2001

Perrysburg Township trustees have approved a tax abatement agreement for a $134 million warehouse and distribution center that the Walgreen Co. plans to build on State Rt. 795 near Oregon Road.

Trustees last night approved a 10-year, 100 percent abatement on real and personal property taxes for the 650,000-square-foot facility. In exchange, Deerfield, Ill.-based Walgreen will pay $45,000 a year to the township, $425,000 a year to Rossford city schools, and $20,000 a year to Penta County Joint Vocational School.

Thomas Bergseth, divisional vice president, said the complex will create 318 jobs in its first three years of operation and employ another 300 workers when it reaches full capacity in seven years. The warehouse will supply 600 stores in Ohio, Michigan, and Indiana.

Mr. Bergseth said the 112-acre site across from the Cedar Bus|i|ness Center was chosen because of its proximity to I-75 and the Ohio Turnpike. He said construction will begin this summer and take about 18 months to complete.
