Success of Castalia fish hatchery translates to rainbow trout for area
3/6/2001One of the state's more popular inland fishing programs - put-and-take rainbow trout - will be continued this spring with the release of more than 100,000 fish in 47 lakes and ponds, 10 of them in northwest Ohio.
The rainbows, all 10 to 13 inches, come from the new, successful Castalia State Fish Hatchery. The hatchery mainly supplies rainbows for the steelhead trout stocking program in Lake Erie tributaries, but it maintains sufficient production for the inland program as well.
The daily creel limit is five trout per angler. Following is a listing of impoundments to be stocked, release dates, and number of fish to be released:
Daugherty Lake, Hancock County, 1,000 fish, tomorrow; Geirtz Lake, Hancock County, 1,000 fish, May 5; Lima Lake, Allen County, March 19; Norwalk Reservoir No. 1, Huron County, 1,000 fish, March 19; Olander Lake, Lucas County, 2,900 fish, April 28; Pearson Pond, Lucas County, 1,500 fish Friday and another 1,200 fish April 21; Schoonover Lake, Allen County, 1,210 fish, April 6; Swanton West Reservoir, Lucas County, 2,250 fish, April 5; Van Wert Reservoir No. 1, Van Wert County, 2,047 fish, May 4; White Star Quarry, Sandusky County, 1,500 fish, April 13.

The sessions are set for Saturday and Sunday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Holiday Inn, 6001 Rockside Rd., Independence, O., just south of Cleveland. Instructors include Denny Brauer, Shaw Grigsby, David Fritts, Don Iovino, and Greg Hawk.
