Toronto mason bids $3 million on stadium job

3/21/2001

The apparent low bid for the masonry work on the downtown ballpark for the Toledo Mud Hens was submitted yesterday by G.A. Masonry, of Toronto.

The company's proposal is slightly less than $3 million to do the brickwork for the ballpark.

Lucas County commissioners earlier rejected a bid for the job submitted by Rudolph/Libbe, Inc., of Walbridge, for about $3.2 million.

At that time, Rudolph/Libbe was the only company to bid on the job. Yesterday, another company, Batts Construction, of Indianapolis, proposed doing the work for slightly more than $3.5 million.

The job originally was estimated at slightly more than $2 million.

Edward Ciecka, county administrator, said the bid from the Canadian company will be reviewed before recommending to county commissioners whether they should accept it.

The ballpark is under construction in an area bounded by Washington, St. Clair, Monroe, and Huron streets, and is expected to cost between $37 million and $39 million.

It is scheduled to be ready for opening day of the baseball season in April, 2002.
