Local surgeon Dr. Amjad Hussain will receive the Award for Excellence tonight from the Toledo Surgical Society.

The 120-member society gives the award each year to a surgeon who has made significant contributions to the medical community. The presentation will be at the Toledo Club, Madison Avenue and 14th Street.

Past leadership roles include the presidency of the Toledo Surgical Society and of the Academy of Medicine of Toledo and Lucas County, and chief of staff of St. Charles Mercy Hospital.

His specialty is thoracic surgery. He practices primarily at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center and St. Charles and Riverside Mercy hospitals.

Dr. Hussain has written articles and columns for The Blade since 1976. For five years, he's written a biweekly column that appears on the newspaper's Pages of Opinion.

He said he was grateful for the recognition. “The most significant accolades are those from your peers,” Dr. Hussain said. “I'm overwhelmed.”
