Disposal site opens for paint, other fluids

Lucas County has opened a drop-off site where residents can dispose of old paint, oil products, pesticides, and auto fluids through October.

Residents who provide a list of the type and amount of the hazardous waste liquids will be assigned a time and location where they can take the items, Kevin Milliken, a spokesman for the Lucas County commissioners, said.

The program is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday to county residents, who must contact the Lucas County Solid Waste Management District before taking items to the disposal site.

Federal environmental rules prohibit the site from accepting the liquids from businesses, schools, apartment complex owners, and churches. The drop-off program is in its third year, evolving from the county's Pitch Old Paint Day project.
