Boy dies from injuries sustained in bike-vehicle crash

An 8-year-old Stickney Avenue boy died yesterday in St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center, where he was taken after he was struck by a sport utility vehicle Saturday while riding his bicycle near his home, authorities said.

Orlando Hopings of the 2900 block of Stickney was pronounced dead about 8 a.m. An autopsy is scheduled for today at the Lucas County coroner's office.

Police said the boy was riding a bicycle across the 2800 block of Stickney about 9:50 p.m. when he was hit by a late-model Jeep driven by Alan Young, 50, of Peck Street, who was southbound on Stickney, police said.

Mr. Young told police that he had stopped to allow an adult who was on a bicycle cross the street. When the adult had proceeded, the boy suddenly appeared from behind a parked van. The SUV struck the boy, knocking him from his bicycle, which ended up under the vehicle's right front wheel, police said.

Mr. Young will not be charged because the boy rode out in front of his SUV, traffic Toledo police Lt. Louis Borucki said.
