The U.S. Department of Justice yesterday asked for a broader temporary restraining order against a North Carolina tax preparer who says he has appeared on at least a dozen Toledo talk radio shows and has at least 170 local clients.

The agency, which last week filed suit in federal court in Greensboro, N.C., wants the court to issue an order to stop Alfred Abdo, Jr., from making statements such as "paying income taxes is voluntary" and "wages are not or may not be subject to income taxes."

Mr. Abdo made false statement on a Toledo radio station the day after the department sued him, the latest government filing states. A hearing on the injunction request is scheduled for tomorrow against Mr. Abdo, who does business as American Tax Planning Co. of Winston-Salem, N.C.
