DEFIANCE - A 17-year-old Sherwood, Ohio, boy was injured in a three-vehicle accident that closed part of U.S. 24 for four hours early yesterday, the Ohio Highway Patrol reported.

Edward Carnahan, Jr., was listed in critical condition in Toledo Hospital. The other drivers involved in the wreck were treated at Defiance Hospital.

Troopers at the patrol's post in Defiance said young Carnahan was westbound at 12:35 a.m. on U.S. 24 and drove left of center, striking an eastbound United Parcel Service tractor-trailer rig head-on. Edward was ejected from his car and landed on the north side of the road.

The impact caused the UPS vehicle, driven by Randy Chandler, 33, of Martinsville, Ind., to hit the guardrail off the east edge of U.S. 24, where it slid out of control and struck a westbound pickup truck driven by Deborah Hays, 35, of Huntington, Ind. The pickup flipped over, while the UPS truck hit the guardrail again. Both vehicles caught on fire.

Troopers said the accident remains under investigation.
