FINDLAY - A 20-year-old man escaped serious injury yesterday when a small single-engine airplane he was flying crashed in a soybean field near Hancock County Road 140 and Allen Township Road 107, the sheriff's office said.

Ryan Edwards, who was flying alone in a Piper aircraft, reported an arm injury, sheriff's deputies said. His address was not available last night.

The plane took off from a private airstrip and was flying near the county landfill about 5:40 p.m. when it lost power soon after takeoff and descended, striking and downing a utility pole, deputies said.

The Federal Aviation Administration was notified.
