Lucas County wants time to ponder electric offer

8/9/2001

Lucas County commissioners said yesterday they will take time to study an electric-rate offer made Tuesday by FirstEnergy Services to Toledo city council.

The commissioners earlier Tuesday had approved terms for electric rates made by WPS Energy Services, of Green Bay, Wis. The cities of Maumee, Sylvania, and Oregon approved the WPS package at meetings held Monday.

All are members of the Northwest Ohio Aggregation Coalition, which was formed to negotiate rates for residential consumers in the area.

WPS had offered to sell power for 4.35 cents per kilowatt-hour, a rate equaled by FirstEnergy at the city council meeting. FirstEnergy also agreed to absorb a one-time $5 switching fee, a step that WPS earlier said they wouldn't do.

Commissioners said a meeting of coalition members will be arranged after FirstEnergy has submitted its proposal in writing.
