Perrysburg Twp. trustees approve rezoning request

Perrysburg Township trustees have approved rezoning 40 acres at the northwest corner of Ayers and Tracy roads to allow for the construction of a multi-family housing development.

The trustees unanimously approved the zoning change during a hearing at its regular meeting on Monday. The land, which is owned by Martha Newsted of Michigan, was zoned for agricultural use. Dold Development Co., of Perrysburg, has an option to buy the land.

Don Cogan, general manager of Dold, said the company plans to build a townhouse-style development. He said the two-story townhouses could draw tenants from Owens Community College.

The owner of farmland adjacent to the site expressed concerns about the impact any development would have on a drainage tile that runs through the site from his farm field. However, Mr. Cogan said his company would work with the owner to avoid disrupting water draining from his land.

Trustees also postponed making a decision on whether to continue funding the economic development authority it formed with Rossford. The Rossford/Perrysburg Township Joint Economic Development Authority was organized in 1998 under Ohio's port authority law.

Trustee Bill Miller said he wants to talk with authority board members before making a decision on suspending the township's contribution. The township is being asked to give $10,000 this year. None of the five members on the board are paid. However, they are reimbursed for expenses.

“We had a reason to start it. We should have a reason to drop out of it,” Mr. Miller said. “Board members have volunteered their time. We should talk to them to find out their feelings and get input on what the port authority has accomplished.”

Trustees also delayed taking action on a request from Gary Britten, acting maintenance supervisor, to hire another employee in his department. Mr. Britten said the employee is needed to assist the staff in snow plowing, ditch mowing, equipment cleaning, brush pickup, sign repair, weed spraying, and sealing road cracks.
