Missing toddler surfaces; mother faces questions

9/3/2001

The mother of a 2 1/2-year-old boy who was found walking alone in the 600 block of Locust Street at 1 a.m. yesterday was reunited with her son after the boy was recognized on a local news program.

Rod Brandt, a spokesman for the Lucas County children services, said a neighbor notified the mother that a photo of her child was broadcast on news programs and authorities were looking for her.

Mr. Brandt said the woman, who didn't report the child missing, arrived at the Children Services office on Adams Street at 6:30 p.m.

Mr. Brandt would not release the identity of the mother. Intake personnel were still interviewing her last night to determine why the boy was left alone and on the street.

“We'll be sharing the information with the police,” he said. “It will be their decision what to do with it from there.”

Mr. Brandt said the boy, who was in good health, will remain in foster care until at least tomorrow when a judge will likely decide where he will be placed.
