Seneca County to lose Humane Society services

9/3/2001

TIFFIN -- Who's going to handle stray dogs in Seneca County? That's what county officials are trying to figure out.

Negotiations between the county commissioners and the county Humane Society over the issue broke off last week, said Deb Spurck, the president of the agency's board of trustees.

As part of a contract proposal, the Humane Society, which has provided services to the county for 37 years, asked the commissioners for $300,000 to build an animal shelter. The commissioners, however, balked at a request.

Now, Ms. Spurck said her agency would no longer house stray dogs from the county after its contract with the commissioners expires at the end of the year. She said the society plans to open a new shelter by 2003.
