2 vie to finish mayor's term on Kelleys Island

9/28/2001

KELLEYS ISLAND — Village residents will decide between two candidates Nov. 6 to complete the term of former Mayor Tony Kuchar, who died Sept. 17.

Interim Mayor Russell Matso and Robert Quinn, co-owner of the Fly-In Bed and Breakfast, turned in candidacy petitions to the Erie County Board of Elections in Sandusky by yesterday's 4 p.m. deadline.

Mr. Matso, 68, a longtime councilman, was council president before succeeding Mr. Kuchar, 68, who took office in January, 2000. Mr. Quinn, 38, who owns a chain of hair and tanning salons, has not held office in the village. He had planned to run for council but withdrew his petitions for that race yesterday.

Because Mr. Kuchar died with more than two years left in his term, which ends in December, 2003, state law mandates an election for the post.
