A fugitive from North Carolina, who was shot by a sheriff's deputy there after allegedly backing a car into him, was arrested yesterday by Ottawa Hills police.

Hermal Brewington, 44, of Wilmington, N.C., was taken into custody about 1:30 a.m. after a traffic stop. He was booked into the Lucas County jail for extradition after being treated for a gunshot wound in the left arm.

The Ottawa Hills officer had noticed that the car in which Mr. Brewington was a passenger had expired license plates. The car was traveling west on Central Avenue near Exmoor Drive when the officer observed it. The vehicle was stopped at Central and Holland-Sylvania Road in Sylvania Township.

In North Carolina, Mr. Brewington has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon and several other offenses for allegedly backing into a New Hanover County sheriff's deputy Sept. 12 during a traffic stop. The deputy fired several shots at the vehicle as it sped away. The deputy was not hurt seriously.

The driver of the car yesterday, David Mason, 41, of 5702 Angola Rd., was cited for driving under suspension and having expired plates.
