A 57-year-old Sylvania Township man was killed Tuesday afternoon when he was hit on the head by a falling tree limb at his home, township police said.

Larry H. Mersing of 2330 Irwin Rd., was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The death was accidental, caused by head and neck injuries, Dr. Cynthia Beisser, Lucas County deputy coroner, ruled.

Mr. Mersing was cutting down the tree with a chainsaw about 1:20 p.m. when the tree began to fall. "As it began to tilt, it struck a higher branch and [the limb] hit him in the left side of the head," Detective Todd Slaman said.
