Ohio searches for gypsy moth problem areas

10/11/2001

Area residents have until Monday to apply for gypsy moth treatment on their property.

Residents who find gypsy moth egg masses on their land may apply to have their property surveyed by the Ohio Department of Agriculture field staff.

The results of staff egg-mass surveys help the department determine what areas to treat for gypsy moths in the spring.

Egg masses are oval-shaped, tan, and about the size of a quarter. Gypsy moths will lay eggs on any surface, including plants, picnic tables, and lawn chairs.

Each May the department sprays hundreds of acres with a bacteria that kills the moths but does not harm people or pets. This year 551 acres in Lucas County received two bacteria treatments at a cost of about $15,000.

Residents may obtain an application at www.state.oh.us/agr. or by calling 1-800-282-1955.
