Tiffin expects to hire new chief soon

10/11/2001

TIFFIN - City officials expect to choose a police chief by the end of the week, nearly 10 months after the job became vacant.

City administrator Wayne Stephens said yesterday that Tiffin likely will hire one of two finalists - David LaGrange, a captain with the Savannah, Ga., police department, or Richard Reeves, a lieutenant with the Ontario, Ohio, police department.

Mr. Stephens and Mayor Bernard Hohman interviewed Lieutenant Reeves on Tuesday and Captain LaGrange on Oct. 5.

Mr. Reeves, who joined the Ontario department in 1990, worked as a Richland County sheriff's deputy from 1985 to 1990 and was a Florida Highway Patrol trooper in 1984-85. He is an Air Force veteran.

Mr. LaGrange, who grew up in the Toledo area, has been with the Savannah police since 1983. He served as a helicopter rescue pilot in the U.S. Coast Guard.

The chief's job has been open since January, when Tom Steyer left to become Seneca County sheriff. Two previous searches failed to fill the post.
