Pike crash kills woman from Findlay

10/24/2001

BRYAN - A Findlay woman died in St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center, Toledo, where she was flown after an accident yesterday on the Ohio Turnpike about seven miles northeast of Bryan, the Ohio Highway Patrol said.

Marjory A. Buckingham, 70, died at 8:26 p.m. yesterday, troopers at the patrol's Swanton post said.

She was driving east, about three miles east of the turnpike's Bryan exit, about 2:50 p.m. when her car went out of control, slid about 125 feet across the median and into the turnpike's westbound lanes, where it went under the trailer of a westbound tractor trailer, striking the truck's rear dual axles.

The semi, driven by Danut Garz, 28, of Chicago, sustained a broken axle under the trailer.

Then her car was struck on the passenger side by a westbound car driven by Kenneth Gatzke, 42, of Cleveland. He was treated at Community Hospitals of Williams County, Bryan, troopers said.

Westbound traffic on the turnpike was stopped for about an hour and backed up about three miles.
