Humane society buys Fremont Animal Hospital

FREMONT -- The Sandusky County Humane Society has purchased the Fremont Animal Hospital, which it intends to turn into the agency's first shelter in nearly five decades.

President Joanne McDowell said yesterday the humane society used part of $500,000 it received from an estate to purchase the building, which will become available in June. The current occupants are building a replacement facility for their practice.

The humane society, which paid $200,000 for the building on Port Clinton Road, has no staff, but rather pays area veterinarians to care for 30 to 50 animals at any one time, she said, at a cost of between $3,000 and $5,000 a month.

The volunteer agency has not operated a shelter since the 1950s, Ms. McDowell said.
