Port Clinton lands grant, loan for sewer main work

PORT CLINTON - The state has agreed to provide more than $70,000 in grant and loan funds to help the city replace a broken sewer main on Hayes Avenue.

Mayor Tom Brown announced Tuesday night that the Ohio Public Works Commission had approved a $45,000 grant and a $28,000 interest-free loan for the project. The money will cover the entire cost of bypassing the 1,800-foot forced main with a shorter section of pipe, Mr. Brown said.

In a letter to the city, commission Director W. Laurence Bicking said the grant and loan were based "on the loss of service due to the line's failure and the inability of the city to support the project financially."

Mr. Brown said the work would allow a decaying section of pipe to be taken out of service and stop periodic sewer backups that have plagued some nearby homes.

"It will help the residents tremendously," he said.
